Good morning, Austin. A Heat Advisory runs until seven tonight, the high is 105, and the heat index will find 110, so this is a day for doing your errands before ten or after eight. The sun came up at 7:13 and goes down at 7:39. A sold-out stadium's worth of people is heading for campus this afternoon, which means the streets around it belong to them until late; if you live nearby you already know the drill, and if you don't, the long way round is the short way today. Somebody on Reddit is hunting a potato sack before a party tonight. The lake is 93 percent full. Drink more water than you think you need.

The Briefing · About our reporting

One program's name keeps turning up in the county's budget

Bar chart of new money added to the Travis County Fiscal Year 2027-28 budget at the September 10 markup: 3 million dollars reserved for outside indigent-defense counsel, 2 million dollars for the Supportive Housing Initiative Pipeline, 1.6 million dollars earmarked for felony case representation, 1.5 million dollars for public defender attorney pay, and 1 million dollars a year for the Travis County Transformation Project

The Central Health board approved a $650 million budget on Wednesday. Travis County commissioners advanced a $2.3 billion one on Thursday. The same households pay both. And both put their new money behind the same idea.

Central Health set aside $127.5 million for mental health services, $54 million of it new, and said those investments align with No Wrong Door — the county program that treats mental health, addiction, homelessness and arrest as one connected problem rather than five separate ones. Its rate sits 6% above the no-new-revenue rate. The district said that could cost most county homesteads an extra $22 a year.

Commissioners worked the other end of the same pipeline. They doubled the reserve for outside defense lawyers to $3 million, added $1.5 million to public defender pay, and put $2 million into supportive housing. Law enforcement asked for another $3.26 million for Axon Enterprise technology. Commissioners took no action on that request, and folded the county's Axon contracts into one department instead.

The Downtown Austin Alliance named five priorities the same week, and No Wrong Door is one of them, with 17 organizations signed on. Its own downtown survey found 69% of respondents worried about public safety tied to homelessness and behavioral health.

What's next: Travis County commissioners vote on the final budget Sept. 29.

Tonight before Die Spitz came on, you offered to take a picture of me and my daughter - thank you. She's my concert buddy but as the years progress and schedules get tighter, we don't go as often as we used to. You were just being a nice person and offering to help, you didn't know how happy you made me to have a real non-selfie pic. I hope you found your friends in the pit!
